59-Year-Old Father Beat Hepatitis B and Cirrhosis with the Liver From His Daughter and Beat The Cancer
The 59-year-old father, who had a liver tumor and cirrhosis due to hepatitis B, held on to life with the transplant he received from his daughter.
After the examinations made on Asım Bekdemir, who applied to the hospital due to the intense pain he experienced in his chest about 3 months ago, a tumor was detected in his liver. The transplant was the only treatment chance for the patient who developed cirrhosis due to Hepatitis B in his liver. Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital General Surgery Specialist performed the treatment of Mr. Bekdemir, who said that he did not like going to the hospital and did not use drugs throughout his life, explained the following:
“Mr. Bekdemir had a liver disease due to Hepatitis B. Later, cirrhosis disease developed on Hepatitis B. That was the source of his complaints. Since he did not want to go to the hospital, his younger daughter Buse reached out to me and brought the previous imaging and laboratory results. They could not persuade him to go to the hospital. When we examined the patient's reports, we saw that he must be transferred without delay. Because of hepatitis and cirrhosis, a tumor had developed in his liver. Thereupon, I talked to Mr. Bekdemir on the phone and explained his situation, and told him that he should have a liver transplant. Since the tumor in Mr. Bekdemir's liver was under 7 centimeters, he was suitable for the transplant. If the tumor had reached 15 centimeters, our patient's liver transplant might not have been successful. ”
Even If There is No Complaint, There May Be a Serious Problem in the Abdomen
Pointing out that problems that may develop in the liver, such as hepatitis B, cirrhosis, or tumors, may progress without causing any complaints in patients, our specialist said, "It should be remembered that a serious disease may develop in the abdomen even if there are no complaints. However, the problem manifests itself with symptoms that may occur when it gets too big. In this case, time is lost in terms of treatment. For instance, if the liver tumors are above 15 cm, the patient may not have a chance of transplantation. “Regular health checks are very significant.”
Both Cirrhosis and Cancer Are Treated Simultaneously
Our expert, who pointed out that tumors in the liver mostly develop cirrhosis, continued: “Without cirrhosis, tumors in the liver develop very rarely. However, there may be the spread of cancers in different organs. Therefore, patients with cirrhosis and hepatitis should be checked regularly. Because with an early diagnosis, cirrhosis can also be treated with a tumor in the liver. Today, while cirrhosis is treated with liver transplantation, the tumor also disappears.”
Reminding that patients should be very careful specially to protect themselves from infection after the transplant, our specialist said, "A new life begins for Mr. Bekdemir with his new liver. After that, he must protect it.”
“I Would Do Anything For My Father”
Asım Bekdemir, who said that he always avoided going to the hospital throughout his life but understood how important it is to go to the doctor at regular intervals today, told his story with the following sentences:
“About 3 months ago I had to go to the hospital because of the pain in my left chest. Tests were performed at the insistence of a close doctor friend. When it became clear that I had problems with my liver, we finally reached out to our specialist after my daughter's research. Our doctor said my only cure would be a liver transplant. Even though I did not accept it at first, I realized that I had no choice. My children were taken care of first by the appropriate donor. When I learned my daughter Ebru is an appropriate donor for me, I hesitate and thought what if something bad happens to her... But she said, “I would do anything for you.” Fortunately, so far everything is going well. My daughter and I are totally fine and healthy."
